What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a screw-like prosthesis used to replace the root portion of a missing tooth that is fastened to your jaw bone to support a crown, bridge, or denture to function much like natural teeth. The implants are generally made of medical-grade Titanium which fuses with your jaw bone by a process known as osseointegration. If you are considering getting dental implants in Dubai, look no further. With a vastly experienced team of expert dentists, Dr. Paul’s offers the best dental implants in Dubai. What are the uses and advantages of Dental Implants?
  • They are used to replace missing or badly mutilated teeth and have them function much like natural teeth.
  • An Implant-supported prosthesis can be used to replace the entire missing dentition or teeth structure. It is a fixed solution and does not require to be taken out and clean, unlike a complete denture. It also feels more natural and comfortable. This concept is known as “All on 4”.
  • There is no need to shave down adjacent teeth structures to replace missing teeth as opposed to the case where a fixed partial denture is fixed.
They are significantly more comfortable than removable partial dentures.
  • They can be used as anchorage devices in orthodontics.

Additional Work That You May Need When Planning for An Implant:

Bone augmentation procedure: Sometimes if the patient does not have sufficient natural bone to hold the implant, bone augmentation is advised. In the procedure, fortifying agents such as bone additives and growth factors are placed into the deficient site. This enables the growth of bone.

Sinus lift procedure: This procedure is particularly used in the case of deficient bone in the upper posterior region. Bone graft is added beneath the sinus, after lifting the sinus membrane. This area is then suitable for placing implants. The total recovery may take a few months. The procedure is also known as sinus augmentation/sinus elevation.

Ridge expansion procedure: When the jaw bone is not wide enough to place the implant, ridge expansion is performed. Bone graft is applied on the small ridge. This facilitates the increase in girth.

What to expect?

A comprehensive oral evaluation and radiographic examinations are done for the diagnosis and treatment planning. You will be required to make two-dimensional and three-dimensional radiographs for the planning. There are so many dental implant types to choose from. An expert prosthodontist  can help you get the best for you. Implant surgery is generally a 2-step procedure. The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia.

In the first step, the implant is inserted into the jawbone and sutured. In the second step which is usually after 2-3 months, the Implantologist will verify the osseointegration. This is followed by making adequate measurements for the fabrication of the prosthesis. The implant crown is lab fabricated and secured into the implant. You can then use the implant much like a natural tooth.

Immediate Load Implants/Same Day Implants

Ideal if you have sufficient healthy natural bone. In this technique, a temporary tooth(crown) is placed immediately after the implant placement surgery. You will be walking out of the clinic with a tooth in place. A major requisite for this is that the implant needs to be well secured while placed into the jawbone.

All on 4 Concept

Applied is the case of completely missing upper and lower teeth. A superior fixed alternative to a complete denture, 4 implants each are placed in the jaw bone in the upper and lower arches respectively. Special abutments are used to give you a temporary complete set of teeth first. After about 6 months i.e. after complete healing of the gum tissues and osseointegration of the implants, the permanent replacement prosthesis is fabricated and fastened into the implants.

FAQs

  • What happens if a missing tooth is not replaced?

The primary functions of teeth like chewing , speech , appearance etc. get affected. Gradual degenerative changes will happen on the jaw bone , TMJ and remaining natural teeth and gums. TMJ can thereafter go into dysfunction and cause pain. Furthermore, the remaining natural tooth can also show wear and tear.

  • Does Implant need special care?

Home care involves brushing and flossing just like a natural tooth. Special flosses or interdental brushes might be required in some very rare cases. Some dentists recommend the use of water floss or a water pick. Professional maintenance involves visiting the Implantologist once in 6 months to evaluate the health of bone and surrounding tissues. He will use special instruments that are safe to be used in such areas to clean the inaccessible areas of debris plaque and calculus.

  • What happens if an implant is not considered to replace a missing tooth?

The other modes of replacing missing teeth are not as comfortable as dental implants. You will need more time to get accustomed to dentures made, and it also requires daily cleaning and care. Furthermore, it is a loose prosthesis in the mouth which the patient will have to put up with. Bridges involve shaving of the adjacent teeth structures while implants mimic the natural tooth the most.

  • What are the ill effects of delayed implant treatment?

If it is a recently extracted site which is not suited for an immediate implant placement the ideal time period for implant placement is 2-3 months. Any delay beyond this period may result in bone shrinkage resulting in difficulties during implant placement. Additional procedures like bone grafting that need time, effort, and money will also be required.

  • Are implants expensive ?

Compared to routine dental procedures like fillings and cleaning implants might have a higher cost. But it is the nature of the procedure, materials used, time required, and the technical expertise of the doctor which is reflected in the cost. But as the saying goes treatment is not expensive but neglect is.
