What are Metal Braces?

Braces are needed for several reasons. It could be crooked and crowded teeth. It could also be overlapping teeth or a bad bite, also known as malocclusion. A bad bite happens when the size of the upper jaw and jaw differs. An underbite is when the lower jaw is bigger, while a bigger upper jaw causes an overbite. The most commonly used orthodontic treatment plan, metal braces have been the traditional choice for ages. Connect with us for a consultation if you are considering whether to get metal braces in Dubai or are looking for an expert orthodontist in Dubai.

The Process for getting Metal Braces

Trusted by millions of happy patients, traditional metal braces are still the orthodontic treatment of choice and are widely recommended for the following dental problems like crowded teeth, underbite, gapped teeth, overbite, crossbite and misalignment.

Teeth Assessment: On your first appointment for the metal braces, we begin with a thorough assessment of your teeth by taking digital pictures and radiographs at our orthodontic clinic in Dubai. Before proceeding to the second visit, we discuss the treatment plan with you. If you are satisfied, we schedule a convenient date to start the treatment.

Fitting the Braces: After the braces are fitted, they are at work, day in and day out by guiding your teeth slowly to sit in their desired position. Once the braces are fitted, you will be asked to visit us every 6-8 weeks to check the progress and do the tightening.

Subsequent Appointments: At every scheduled appointment, your orthodontist changes the rubber bands and tightens the wires. Sometimes, you may feel your teeth are loose at the base. But the feeling disappears, once the treatment is complete.

Components of Metal Braces

Metal braces come as a set of three components: brackets, wires, and ligatures or rubber bands. Made from either titanium metal or stainless steel, we guarantee strength and an allergy-free treatment process.

Brackets: Brackets are small cube-like pieces that you can see attached to each of your front teeth.

Wires: The wire winds around your teeth joining each bracket. It keeps the pressure even.

Ligatures: Ligatures are tiny elastic bands or wires that are tied to the brackets to secure the wire. They are replaced during your scheduled dental visits.

FAQs

  • How often should I clean my teeth with braces?

Ensuring that you maintain a consistent hygiene routine is key to ensure a successful outcome. There is absolutely no better joy than having your braces removed and seeing that immaculate smile reveal itself! You have to however be committed to the journey which includes good oral hygiene, to get there. You should ideally brush your teeth thoroughly after each and every snack and meal in order to remove food particles and debris so that they do not stick to your braces and develop harmful bacteria over time, thereby jeopardising your oral health. In addition to this, flossing is also a crucial part of the routine as your toothbrush might do a satisfactory job of removing leftover particles but can’t necessarily reach every corner of your mouth.

  • How long will it take to complete the treatment?

The length of the treatment varies for each patient and is based on a variety of factors. Most patients wear braces anywhere between twelve months to three years. However, this varies from patient to patient. The duration is also a factor of what dental irregularities you are trying to fix - a misaligned tooth or severe crowding of the teeth might take longer to fix. Treatments involving extractions tend to take a longer time than non-extraction cases.

  • How are braces put on my teeth?

The entire process is completely painless and much faster than you’d expect, in actuality. The entire appointment might even take less than an hour, and your braces might even be put on right after your consultation. As a part of the prepping process, your orthodontist will first polish and clean and polish your teeth before they begin. They will thereafter apply a solution to the surface of your teeth to prepare them for the adhesive that will help hold your braces in place. Once this is completed, the bonding glue and braces will be attached. In the final step, which is necessary only in some cases, the elastics will be inserted and this is only necessary in the case where you are not wearing self-ligating braces.

  • I’m an adult - is it too late for me to get braces?

Metal braces work at all ages. They can handle a wide variety of dental irregularities that impact children and adults alike. However, you must consult with your dentist to ascertain as to whether you need to get braces, and if you are willing to comply with the required treatment, it’s easy to qualify. Due to the versatility offered by metal braces, a large number of patients have found that their orthodontic problems can be fixed easily with this chosen method. In fact, adult braces have become much more common in recent years.

  • How often should I see my dentist?

You may need to see your dentist quite regularly mostly, once in a month while wearing braces as they can be tricky to clean since there might be a build-up of tartar or plaque. Your dentist will also keep an eye on your progress to ensure that there are no complications. Your braces might also have to be adjusted periodically if required.

  • Are metal braces comfortable?

It is normal to feel uncomfortable with metal braces until your mouth adapts to them. Minor pain and blisters can crop up in the initial days but our dentist will be providing you with orthodontic wax to apply around the brackets for lasting relief. This discomfort would mostly occur in the first few days while getting used to having braces in your mouth.

  • How to take care of metal braces?

With traditional metal braces, you can follow the same oral hygiene routine that you were following before braces. However, cleaning the braces requires some extra effort which will be guided by your orthodontist. He may provide you with a dental kit to maintain optimum oral hygiene.

  • What are the advantages of metal braces?

Metal braces are credited with the following benefits:

    • Metal braces are one of the proven orthodontic methods for assured success
    • They are easy to take care
    • They are ideal for everyone, regardless of age
